Welcome to O.P.E.R.A.!

The Oil & Petrochemical Employees Recreation Association, O.P.E.R.A., is an organization that benefits employees of oil and petrochemical companies and your families by offering family events and opportunities for you to enjoy! For those of you looking to fill your social calendar, OPERA offers BINGO games with cash prizes and door prizes. We host an annual movie event during the summer, so our families can have the full theater experience. You can participate in one of our disc golf or traditional golf tournaments or join a team in our softball or basketball leagues! We even have a private boat launch that leads directly into the Neches River!

HISTORY

O.P.E.R.A. represents the Oil & Petrochemical Employees Recreation Association. The club was originally named the "Texaco Employees Recreation Association (T.E.R.A.)." T.E.R.A. was formed in 1979 by employees of Texaco that played and created a softball league. In cooperation with Texaco's Port Arthur Plant management, TERA acquired a lease for a tract of land in Texaco's Nederland Station to build four softball diamonds in July of 1979. In the inaugural season the softball league fielded 18 teams totaling 450 employees. At that time TERA planned to expand its growth toward more family oriented activities.

The organization assembled a Board of Directors and the dreams of the members of the organization developed into a full scale recreation club. In September of 1980 the Texaco Bowling league voted to join TERA and mark one of the first step toward unity for the organization. As the opportunities for future growth became apparent, new activities began to develop which included basketball, tennis, golf and fishing.

The TERA membership declined severely with the 1980's employee downsizing at Texaco. Many changes occurred within the organization, but with pure determination, management support and a strong leadership, TERA survived the modifications and continued to bring employees and their families together.

In the early 90's, the Texaco plant had become a joint venture known as Star Enterprise and the Huntsman Corporation had purchased the Texaco Chemical plant. These events led to the organization name change; "Oil and Petrochemical Employees Recreation Association." The new name would better symbolize the various changes in membership and companies that represented OPERA in the present and in the future.

To date, OPERA is still viable and offers its members a boat launch venue that outlets into the Neches River for fishermen, hunters, or just recreational fun; a travel club; softball club; golf club, bowling club, various discounts for members: and lots of activities and events for every age group such as an annual Movie Event, Splash-Day at the Waterpark; BINGO events, and various other activities.
